Effective May 1, 2011 anyone receiving VA benefits for the first time (new claimants / recipients) will be required to set up for direct deposit or will need to receive their payment via Direct Express card, a pre-paid debit card. Veterans who are currently receiving their VA payments via check will have until March 1, 2013 to set up for direct deposit.
